2026 Fall Fun Guide

Fall is here, and with it comes the best season of family outings all year - corn mazes, apple orchards, hayrides, and just enough spooky fun to keep things interesting. We've pulled together every fall event worth your Saturday, organized by how far you're willing to drive: in Charlotte, within an hour, and within two hours. Every listing links straight to the venue's official page - dates and prices are current as of this year's listings, but small farms update their calendars often, so we always recommend a quick check before you load up the car.

A quick planning note: Most of these farms are cash-and-check-friendly but not always card-friendly, so grab some cash before you go. Closed-toe shoes are a good call almost everywhere, and pretty much every pumpkin patch will be muddy if it's rained recently - dress the kids (and yourself) accordingly.

IN CHARLOTTE

Charlotte Knights' Pumpkin Palooza

When: One Saturday in early-to-mid October (historically the 2nd Saturday of the month; check the site closer to the date for the exact 2026 date) 

Where: Truist Field, 324 S. Mint Street, Uptown Charlotte

Cost: Free admission. Pumpkins run about $10 (small) to $20 (large)

Parking: Uptown parking decks nearby (paid); no dedicated free lot at the stadium

Nowhere else can your kids pick a pumpkin out of major-league outfield grass. The Knights turn Truist Field into a one-day pumpkin patch with live music, a beer garden for the grown-ups, a pumpkin decorating station, and fall food and drink at the concession stands. It's free to get in, pumpkins are first-come-first-served, and a portion of every purchase benefits the Charlotte Knights Charities Foundation - so you're doing a little good while you're at it. We love that it's an Uptown outing that doesn't require a full day commitment; swing by for an hour, snap some great photos on the field, and be home in time for naps.

Festival in the Park

When: September 25–27, 2026 (Fri 4pm–9pm, Sat 10am–9pm, Sun 10am–5pm)

A 60+ year Charlotte autumn tradition, Freedom Park transforms into a massive open-air arts marketplace featuring over 200 artists, live music across multiple stages, family activities, and local food vendors surrounding the lake. It is one of the city's favorite ways to kick off cool weather in a scenic setting. We love it as the ultimate low-key arts outing where you can grab a bite, wander around the lake under the changing leaves, and listen to local music without spending a dime to get in.

Mecktoberfest at Olde Mecklengburg Brewery 

When: Select weekends in September & October 2026 (LoSo: Sept 11–13 & Sept 18–20; Ballantyne: Oct 2–4 & Oct 9–11)

Charlotte’s quintessential Oktoberfest celebration brings authentic German beer, traditional Tyrolean and polka music, stein-holding competitions, and fresh pretzels to OMB's expansive biergartens. The event is family and dog-friendly during daytime hours with plenty of space for kids to run around. We love grabbing a liter boot of Mecktoberfest lager and soaking up the lively biergarten atmosphere right in town.

Rural Hill Corn Maze (Amazing Maize Maze)

When: Weekends, September 6 - October 31, 2026. Day Maze: Fri-Sun, 10am-5pm (must enter by 3:30pm). Night Maze begins in October, Friday & Saturday nights at 5pm (must enter by 9pm)

One of the largest corn mazes in the Southeast, this 5-acre, 2-mile maze has been a Charlotte tradition since 1998 on a historic 265-acre farm. This year's theme leans into Rural Hill's Scottish roots, complete with a resident Highland cow. Beyond the maze itself, there's a tractor-pulled hayride, a pumpkin patch, bounce houses, food trucks, and local beer for the adults. Volunteers with flags are stationed throughout in case anyone truly gets lost, so it's a safe bet even for maze novices. We love the night maze in October for older kids and teens - it's a totally different (and more thrilling) experience once the sun goes down.

SCarowinds & Tricks and Treats

When: SCarowinds (nighttime): select nights, September 11 - November 1, 2026. Tricks and Treats (daytime, family-friendly): select dates, September 12 - November 1, 2026

Carowinds does double duty every fall. During the day, Tricks and Treats brings out Peanuts characters in costume, trick-or-treat stations, and Halloween-themed but not-scary fun that's great for younger kids. After dark, the park transforms into SCarowinds - the Carolinas' largest Halloween event, with haunted mazes (this year featuring The Conjuring: Beyond Fear and a Friday the 13th-themed maze), scare zones, and nighttime rides. Note that SCarowinds' nighttime scares are recommended for ages 13+, and the park enforces a chaperone policy for anyone 15 and under after a certain hour. We love that one ticket covers both worlds - bring the little ones during the day, then let the teens come back for the scares.

Fall for Matthews Festival

A cozy, small-town fall festival right in the heart of Matthews, hosted by the Matthews Chamber of Commerce. Expect arts and crafts vendors, a sip-and-stroll for the adults, live music, food trucks, a kids' area with a mini pumpkin patch, and a petting zoo. It's the kind of low-key, walkable event you can pop into for an hour without committing your whole day - perfect for a fall morning downtown followed by lunch at one of Matthews' restaurants.

Hodges Family Farm Pumpkin Patch

The longest-running working farm inside Charlotte's city limits - over 100 years and still going, just north of UNC Charlotte. We love it as the easy, low-commitment option when you want pumpkin-patch photos without eating up your whole Saturday in the car.

Carrigan Farms - Pumpkin Picking & Scarrigan Farms

A fifth-generation family farm in the Lake Norman area that goes all-in on fall. Reserve a time slot online, then take a hayride out to the real pumpkin patch to cut your own pumpkin right off the vine - gardening gloves recommended, the vines are prickly! At night in October, the same farm transforms into Scarrigan Farms, a mile-long haunted walking trail with professional actors and elaborate sets. We love that this one farm covers both ends of the fall spectrum - wholesome daytime pumpkin picking for the little ones, and a genuinely scary night out for the teens and adults, all in one location.

Cherry Place Farm

When: Saturdays and Sundays in October (Sat 10am-6pm, Sun 1pm-6pm)

A charming, family-run farm just off I-77 that keeps things simple: a self-guided fall festival with a two-acre corn maze, hayrides, a petting zoo, barnyard games, and free popcorn included with admission. No reservations needed, and it's genuinely one of the better values in the area since nearly everything is bundled into one ticket price. We love the low-key, unpretentious vibe here - it's a real working farm, not an amusement park, and that comes through in the best way.

Aw Shucks Farms

When: Season runs approximately September 23 - November 6, 2026; daytime family hours during the week and weekends, with a separate nighttime haunted attraction on select nights

A genuine Union County institution and a favorite for South Charlotte families - Aw Shucks has been featured on the History Channel's American Pickers and offers a huge range of activities: a corn maze, pumpkin patch, hayrides, an 1800s train car to explore, a 1950s soda shop, fossil mining, and pony rides. At night, things shift into haunted-attraction mode for anyone looking for a scare. Because programming has shifted year to year, we'd recommend confirming current daytime vs. nighttime hours on their site before you go. We love how much ground there is to cover here - plan for a half-day visit minimum.

The Hunter Farm

When: Through early November; Tue-Fri 2-7pm, Sat-Sun 9am-7pm; "Farm Fridays" add live music and food trucks

Where: 13624 Providence Road, Weddington, NC (very close to Waxhaw)

This is one of the closest full pumpkin-patch experiences for South Charlotte and Union County families. A wagon ride takes you out to the petting barn to meet the farm animals, then on to the pumpkin patch to pick your own. "Farm Fridays" in the fall add live music, food trucks, and adult beverages for a more grown-up evening version of the same experience. We love that it's basically a hometown tradition for anyone in Weddington, Waxhaw, or Marvin - no long drive required for a full fall outing.

Wise Acres Organic Farm

A great pick if you want your pumpkin-patch outing to lean a little more sustainable - Wise Acres grows certified organic pumpkins and keeps things simple with a wagon ride, farm animals, and a playground. The wood-fired pizza on-site gets consistent praise, and the farm has a noticeably uncrowded, unhurried feel compared to some of the bigger commercial operations. We love it for families who want a quieter, less commercialized pumpkin-patch afternoon.

Lineberger's Farm

A fourth-generation family farm with over 100 varieties of pumpkins and gourds - genuinely one of the best selections in the region if you want something more unusual than a standard round orange pumpkin. Kids can run wild on tire mountains, slides, swings, and a corn crib while you browse. We love that admission here is always free - you only pay for what you take home, which makes it an easy, low-pressure stop even if you're just passing through Gastonia.

Hall Family Farm

Celebrating over 25 years in business, this is a full fall festival built around an 8-acre corn maze, with 40+ additional attractions including U-pick flowers, farm animals, and a jumping pillow. The Trail of Terror on weekend nights in October adds a scarier option for older kids and adults. We love that it's equidistant from both Charlotte and the Spartanburg/Greenville area, making it a nice split-the-difference option if you're coordinating with family from either direction.

Carolina Renaissance Festival

Not a pumpkin patch, but absolutely a fall tradition - this is a full day of jousting knights, falconry, mermaids, comedy and circus acts across 16 stages, plus a 25-acre artisan marketplace. It's a rain-or-shine outdoor event, so dress for the weather. We love it as the "big day out" option on this list - budget the whole day, and know that even older kids and teens who think they're too cool for a Ren Faire almost always end up having a great time watching the jousting.

Fall Frolic - Anne Springs Close Greenway

When: Last three weekends of October, Sat & Sun, 9am-4pm (horse rides Sat 11am-3pm, Sun 1pm-4pm)

Set inside a 2,100-acre nature preserve, Fall Frolic pairs classic fall-festival activities - a homegrown pumpkin patch, wagon rides, a kiddie corn maze, petting zoo, and face painting - with the natural beauty of the Greenway itself. Food trucks and beverage vendors are on-site each weekend. We love the setting here more than almost anywhere else on this list; it doesn't feel like a commercial operation, it feels like a genuinely beautiful piece of preserved land that happens to have a pumpkin patch on it.

Waxhaw Autumn Treasures

When: Second weekend of October (2025 was Oct 11; watch the Downtown Waxhaw Association site for the 2026 date), 10am–6pm

Waxhaw's own hometown fall festival, and one close to home for South Charlotte families. Local crafters display their wares on Main Street, musicians fill the streets with live music, and barbecue teams compete to sell you their best home-cooked meats (tasting tickets available so you can sample from all the competitors). We love that this one requires zero driving for anyone already in the Waxhaw area - park once and spend the whole afternoon browsing, eating, and running into everyone you know.

Patterson Farm Market & Tours

When: Mid-September through early November 2026

A Rowan County classic, Patterson Farm offers a full slate of fall activities including a pumpkin patch, tractor-drawn wagon rides, a corn maze, farm animals, and Pawpaw Carl's Playground. The farm market sells fresh produce, hot apple cider donuts, homemade ice cream, and kettle corn. We love this spot for families with younger kids—the farm layout is manageable, interactive, and less overwhelming than some of the region's larger commercial operations.

Windy Hill Orchard & Cidery

Bush-N-Vine

You will find a 1-mile hiking trail, farm cafe serving cider slushies and ice cream, and wagons ready to haul your pumpkin haul back to the car. We love it for a simple, authentic morning outing where you can pick unique gourds and bypass amusement-park-style crowds.

NC Apple Festival

When: September 4-7, 2026 (Fri-Sun 10am-9:30pm, Mon 10am until the parade ends)

A genuine only-in-Hendersonville event and a Labor Day weekend tradition - this street fair celebrates the region's apple-growing heritage with an arts & crafts fair, a massive food court full of apple-everything (fried apple pies are the move), and a Monday parade to close things out. Local orchards set up stands so you can sample and buy straight from the growers. We love pairing this with an actual orchard visit the same weekend - Hendersonville is "Apple Alley," and you're already there.

Hendersonville-Area Apple Orchards

• Justus Orchard - 187 Garren Road. One of the first orchards in the state to open its rows to u-pick visitors, with cider donuts that regulars swear by.
• Grandad's Apples - 2951 Chimney Rock Road. A 120-acre family farm with a bakery, playground, and a big pumpkin patch starting late September.

Eliada Fall Festival & Corn Maze

Named one of the top corn mazes in the country, Eliada's is genuinely massive - 8 acres and 4 miles of trails, the largest maze in Western NC. Hickory Nut Gap Farm

A working farm with genuinely beautiful mountain scenery, offering hayrides, pony rides, a trike track, and a "sound silo" with instruments for kids to bang on. We love this one for the setting - Fairview's rolling hills make it one of the more scenic farm visits on this whole list.

C&J Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze

We love this one precisely because it doesn't feel commercialized - it's the pumpkin patch equivalent of a hidden gem, and it's worth combining with a Blue Ridge Parkway drive while you're up there.

New River Corn Maze 

When: Historically mid-September through late October - note: this farm was closed for the 2025 season and had hoped to reopen for 2026; confirm current status on Facebook before planning a trip

Set along the scenic New River near Deep Gap, this maze has historically offered over a mile of path plus a tram ride around the farm to take in the views - genuinely one of the more picturesque settings on this whole list. We're flagging this one with caution since it didn't operate in 2025; check their Facebook before building a trip around it, and treat C&J or the corn mazes closer to Charlotte as your backup plan.

Denver Downs Farm

We love how uniquely mountain-charming this festival is—you can bring your own caterpillar or inspect the options on-site to enter the races.

Apple Hill Orchard & Cider Mill
