5 Stretches Your Kids Should Be Doing

Last week we shared some great information about Sever's and Osgood Schlatter's. These common childhood orthopedic issues can cause a great deal of pain in young athletes. This week we have some great ideas for dealing with these issues at home. Matt Himsey, PT, DPT, SCS with OrthoCarolina has provided us with some great stretches that your kids can do at home to help strengthen and relieve some of the discomfort associated with Sever's and Osgood Schlatter's. These stretches are great for kids just to help build strength and flexibility. Below you will 5 stretches, the reason your child should do that movement and pictures of how to complete that movement. 


Kneeling Hip Flexor Stretch: Culture of sitting (school for kids) causes tightness in the front of the hips and limits the hips’ ability to move behind our body. Sports activities demand good flexibility of the hips. Tight hip flexors can cause low back pain and knee pain

                              

 

    Prone Knee Flexion Stretch: Will help to prevent Osgood Schlatters

                             

                         

 

Calf Stretch: Will help to prevent Sever’s Disease. Tight calves can cause compensation in the foot in order to walk/run well


                              

 

Child’s Pose Stretch: Stretches out muscles on the lumbar and thoracic spine, as well as the shoulder, hips, and knees. Great for baseball, volleyball, and tennis players


                             

                              

 Wall Angel: This is a cheat, it’s not totally a stretch, but it’s a mobility exercise to counteract the poor postural choices our society forces us into
