What's the Deal With Norwex Anyway?

I'm going to tell you!

By Bailey Dunmire October 3, 2019

I am a skeptic by nature and because I spend all of my day doing marketing I have become even more skeptical. Last week I had the good fortune of running into my friend Bailey at the allergist. We chatted a bit and I was telling her how badly my son has been suffering from allergies and the my daughter had to start seeing a pulmonologist for her asthma. She pulled a cloth out of her purse and said, take this home and try it, stop with all of the cleaning products and try this. I had heard of Norwex before but did not believe the hype (see comment above) but I heard her out and took the little sample cloth home. I went to wipe down my kitchen counters with the cloth and was immediately struck by how well they actually work! I will admit I became a little obsessive and wiped my whole kitchen down like crazy to see if the cloth could really clean anything, well it does. I am a believer~ I was so thrilled I asked Bailey to send me a post about the products so I could share the information with you!

Knowing that your child is suffering is one of the worst feelings as a momma! Unfortunately, both of my daughters, Ava (13) and Ella (10) suffer from ASTHMA! It is a dreaded word in my house because one of my best friends died from an asthma attack when she was just 27 years old!

It seemed as though Ella’s asthma only fired up when she had a cold, but when they are young and in daycare, that can be every other week. When Ella was two, I took her to a sick clinic at the pediatrician’s office on a Sunday only to leave in an ambulance. She spent 4 very long nights in the hospital hooked to oxygen. Thankfully, she seemed to outgrow the worst of it, but I never let my guard down. I have asked myself, is it something in our home? Is it something that I was exposed to when I was pregnant? I will probably never know the answer.

Ava on the other hand has been having issues starting in the summer months and getting worse in the fall. I try to rationalize it and say, she’s not two anymore and can tell me when something is wrong. Yes and no! She is like any other teenager and will wait until it’s really bad to say anything. Or she will simply procrastinate to use the inhaler {you know the middle school image is important}. We’ve even had an argument about her using the spacer for her inhaler at school. I digress.

I tell you all this only because I want to help other mothers! We can get caught up in the daily grind and not realize what we’re doing at home can help exacerbate the situation. We can also criticize and pick apart every little thing we’ve done as a mother.

My husband and I are former restaurant managers, who have been over-educated in the “foodborne illness” department. We sit straight and act like, we’ve got this! We know about pesky bacteria, salmonella, viruses and parasites. We know how to rid our kitchen counters and surfaces of germs! Chemicals! Yes, ma’am, we used to spray away.

Oh, so you say that you don’t use the spray? You use the wipes instead? Oh, even better, what is the largest organ in your body? I will give you a few minutes to come up with the answer, you know it! SKIN! Yes, our skin is the largest organ in our body, and it takes only 26 seconds for our skin to absorb chemicals in the wipes.

Can I ask you a quick question? Have you ever read the “instructions” on the back of the container? I guarantee you that we’ve all mis-used this method to disinfect. I have another question? How many of you buy wipes each year for your child’s classroom? I know that I have! We like to empower our kids and have them help clean-up, right? I used to keep a little travel pack in my purse. Heaven forbid anyone in my family push a grocery cart with all of those germs covering the handle!

The regular use of antibacterial spray cleaners on a daily basis can cause the body as much harm as smoking 20 cigarettes a day!!! WHAT?! You are telling me that keeping a clean kitchen or bathroom is doing more harm than good?!?!?

Fortunately, I was raised in the 70’s by hippies! My aunt, and second mama had a home birth before it was popular. She saw a naturopath rather than a regular doctor. So, I always have a good knowledge of holistic views versus modern views. My views lie somewhere in the middle ground.

Back in the fall of 2018 a good friend was having a Norwex party and invited me. I was going to support her. I didn’t plan to buy anything! I was going in there with the attitude that only my kitchen spray can kill harmful bacteria and viruses. The consultant did a “chicken demo” with a third-party (not made or sold by Norwex) tester. She rubbed raw chicken on my friend’s kitchen counter! I was going out of my head! What the heck!!!

Then she cleaned the counter with a Norwex envirocloth that was damp with WATER! {You heard that right!} No hidden chemicals! Then she tested the counter and the cloth with the protein tester! It came back negative for protein {protein is smaller than bacteria}. My mind was blown, so I bought a package!

I had buyer’s remorse before my order arrived. I was concerned that I just spent money on something that I would not love. Who loves cleaning anyway? Long story short, my order arrived and I started cleaning. I cleaned my shower while I was in the shower with a cloth and water. I cleaned my kitchen floor with water and a microfiber mop!

GUESS WHAT!?!? It worked! It even did a better job than the chemical method. Norwex microfiber is 1/200th the size of a human hair and it grabs and traps dirt, grime and germs. What sets Norwex microfiber apart from other microfiber? BacLock! Norwex blends the fibers with microsilver like coffee and creamer. What does microsilver have to do with anything, you might ask? Well, I will tell you, silver has antibacterial properties. It is like birth control for bacteria, mold and germs. Silver will not allow the yucky stuff grow.

Do you know what really sealed the deal with me? I could not get my windshield clean. We won’t talk about my 43-year-old eye sight, but let’s just say that I don’t need a streaky windshield to mess with my vision! The window cloth is amazing! I actually enjoy cleaning now and I have less laundry.

The Norwex mission is improving quality of life by radically reducing chemicals in our homes.
