Tongue Twister Challenge

By Sarah Baumgardner, Instructor and Music Director for Matthews Playhouse May 4, 2020

Ready to have a little extra fun during your next video chat with your friends? Or perhaps you want to challenge your family, grandparents, and even yourself to see how fast and accurate your tongue can be! This game is a fun challenge that works just as well over an internet-based video call as it does in person. Simply select a favorite tongue twister, practice saying it, and then ask others to give it a try!

As performers, we use tongue twisters and similar sets of words and sentences to get our mouths and faces warmed up for class, rehearsal and of course before a show! Some of our favorites from Matthews Playhouse are included below, but you may want to find some others by doing an online search for “tongue twisters.”

You might be surprised by what the adults in your life might remember from their childhood too! For a maximum challenge, try saying some of these, and others you may find, multiple times in a row. Try them at least 3 to 5 times and see how well you do!

Tongue Twisters to try:

  • “Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear, Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair. Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn’t fuzzy, was he?”
  • “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked. If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?”
  • “Red Leather, Yellow Leather, Red Leather, Yellow Leather, Red Leather, Yellow Leather…”
  • “Irish wristwatch, Irish wristwatch, Irish wristwatch, Irish wristwatch…”
  • “Unique New York, Unique New York, Unique New York, Unique New York, Unique New York…”
