10 Best Places to Hide the Matzoh

By Rachael Weiss~ Publisher Union County Macaroni Kid March 12, 2023

Whether you celebrate Passover or not, the most fun part of every seder is finding the Afikomen - the middle matzoh that is hidden and held "hostage" for money.

I've spoke with Jewish moms and dads from far and wide and here are the 10 BEST places to hide that Afikomen (and few places that are totally off limits!)

  1. A book shelf - preferably one with a lip on it or in between the books on the shelf. But you need to make sure that the shelf is attached to the wall, or else some very curious kiddo (mine) might (WILL) climb it. And that's dangerous (trust me - I know this for a FACT).
  2. Chair cushions are sneaky things! No one thinks you can sit on matzah - it would surely break, right? NOPE! If you have a padded cushion, you can easily put it under your tuchas and no one will be the wiser!
  3. Plants get hungry too - and they make EXCELLENT hiding places. Again, remember - if you have Captain Destructo in your house, you'll want to make sure its not tippable.
  4. Tablecloths aren't just for tables anymore. They are basically magic curtains under which you can hide anything flat. Hiding in plain sight is always a good one.
  5. Mantle decors - like art or sculptures - hide things quite well. You can also lay it flat and place things ON it. It's just above the eye-line and typically a great spot.
  6. Family photo frames tend to blend into the background and get over-looked, often. This is a great spot to place that Afikomen.
  7. The piano bench or even inside the lid of our grand piano was always a good one. A few moms said that this was one of the spots their grandparents chose often.
  8. Toy bins or other storage containers. For us, most of these are on the second floor of the house and I can't keep an eye on the kiddos that way, but if you have on on the ground floor - EXCELLENT spot!
  9. Coat pockets ~ either those hanging from the back of a chair, thrown on a couch or hanging in the closet. Just make sure it is deep enough to hold the whole thing!
  10. and our favorite: Inside a board game box! I have never done this and am fairly certain this will be our spot this year!

One thing we can all agree on: THE BATHROOM IS OFF LIMITS always, and forever.

Happy hiding and many thanks to the moms who weighed in on this! Chag Pesach Sameach to all who celebrate.
