Date Night: Foodie School in Fort Mill

Trying Something New Never Tasted So Fun!

May 3, 2021

You would think by the time you have teenagers date nights are plentiful but as we have learned, they still require planning and working around crazy schedules. While we do not need to hire a babysitter anymore, we have their social life to work around. When looking for a fun night out, I discovered The Foodie School on Instagram. Lucky us we were able to set up a date night for ourselves and our MK bestie from Union County. You might remember Chef Mara and Chef Aleks from the Salud cooking school in South Park. While that space may be closed, they are still sharing their same passion and love for cooking in a brand new space at 300 Springhill Farm Road in Fort Mill.

The reservation process is super easy - we just logged on to their website and selected the class we wanted to take. All of the menus are available online and you can easily see what you'll be making. For people who have dietary restrictions, there is space to let them know and, of course, they will either let you know that this is NOT the right class for you or that it can be easily modified to accommodate you. I am vegetarian and they were wonderful about accommodating me. While most of the meal was vegetarian there was some delicious smelling pancetta going on the broccolini. Our instructor headed to the stove and made a portion for me that was amazing, she also whipped up a sauce for my ravioli. I was very appreciative of how great they managed this for me.

The night before we arrived, we received an email from Chef Mara reminding us to wear long pants, closed-toe shoes, and (for those with long hair) to tie back our hair for the evening. We were invited to bring our own beverages and reminded about COV19 protocols (masks, temperature checks and to say home if we are unwell).

Class started at 6:30 and we were meeting our friends from Macaroni Kid South Charlotte!  So off we went with 2 bottles of wine and an appetite - which was a good thing because the menu was amazing:

  • Asisago White Bean Dip with Crostinis
  • Foccacia Bread
  • Sautee Broccolini
  • Homemade Semolina Ravioli Stuffed with Fresh Herbs and Ricotta
  • Browned Butter Sauce with Prosciutto, Peas and Pea Shoots
  • Olive Oil Cake with Lemon Glaze

Everything we made was delicious - from the pasta (not too heavy, perfectly prepared) to the olive oil cake that was a delightful balance of sweet and savory - I'd never enjoyed making dinner as much as I did that night. And, to be able to experience it with my friends and partner made it even better. The kitchen was spacious and easily accommodated the 14 guests, 2 instructors and 2 helpers. We were divided into groups and got to work making our dinner. And, as elements of our dinner cooked, rose, or settled, we were able to enjoy our first course together in the dining area outside the kitchen.

The Foodie School offers classes all year long, focusing on different cooking techniques or themes throughout the year. This summer, in addition to their private kids and teen parties, The Foodie School will be offering summer programming for children 8+ called "Future Foodies." These classes will run nearly every week on Tuesday and Wednesday for $135 for both classes from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. Kids will start with a tour of Italy in June, moving on to Appetite for Asia, then Greek Getaway. Each class is for different age groups, classified by grade (4-6, 7-9, 10-12). Registration for these classes is available HERE.

You can find more information about The Foodie School and register for classes on their website or on Facebook and Instagram

While no money was exchanged, The Foodie School hosted Macaroni Kid for these classes in exchange for some social media coverage.
