It's Swim Season: How Safe is Your Pool?

Pool Safety Tips from Pool Scouts

By Pool Scouts June 12, 2021

School's out for the summer and the heat is, at times, pretty unbearable here in Union County. We know you are eager to get your toes wet and your kids are equally as excited for pool season.

But with the joy of the splish-splays comes some pretty significant danger. Drowning is a silent killer and is the leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of 5 and the second leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of 15. According to the CDC,10 people die each day from drowning in the US and it only takes 2 minutes in less than 2" of water to drown.

So, what can you do to maximize your water safety? Here are 5 water safety tips we think everyone should practice:

  • When in doubt, use a flotation device like a US Coast Guard-approved puddle jumper or life vest - especially if you are taking a trip to the beach or lake this summer or will be out boating. While nothing takes the place of strong swimming skills, this is a close second and in some cases and great complement.
  • Secure the perimeter of your pool - there are fences that can be installed and taken up quickly and efficiently and will be your best protection, especially with young kids.
  • Talk to your kids about water safety - talk to them about the dangers of horse-play in the pool and show them appropriate behavior
  • Always swim with a buddy - this is even applicable for us grown-ups. Make sure that you are never swimming alone.
  • Especially when the pool is not in use, remove the toys and other temptations from the pool area.

Water play and pool fun is a summer staple and we hope you enjoy every minute! Stay safe.
