Stay Hydrated During Your Summer Workout

ISI Elite Training®'s Tips for Keeping Hydrated During Hot Months

By ISI Elite Training® Matthews July 9, 2021

Did you know that you should be drinking a cup of fluid every 15 minutes of exercise session? No matter the season, you are working hard and you need to replenish! A good rule of thumb is to drink two cups of fluid for every pound that you lost due to water loss during the activity.

When you are hot, your body pumps a higher volume of blood to your skin causing you to sweat.  As the sweat evaporates off the skin, it helps cool you.  If your body is struggling to cool off, your core temperature may rise and your heart will have to work harder as it pumps blood to meet the additional demands of stimulating a sweat response.

Here are a three great tips to help you increase your water intake during these hotter months:

  • Eat more water rich fruits and veggies such as watermelon, strawberries, grapefruit, peaches and cantaloupe.
  • A great indicator that you may be dehydrated is if you find yourself thirsty. Hydration works best if you make it a daily routine to stay on top of your hydration.
  • Do not let yourself get thirsty before you hydrate ~ make it a habit to hydrate consistently throughout the day and be mindful on the days you exercise that you will need to make an effort to replenish, especially when exercising outside where you will be sweating due to heat and humidity.

We hope this helps you understand hydration a bit better, but remember, these tips and tricks are just a baseline and there are other ways to think about hydration and execute a healthy balance with hydration depending on where your source of information is coming from as well as your body's reaction to hydration/dehydration.
