I love fall! The smells, the food, the cooler temps, and the way that the world just seems to be settling in for a good long snuggle! Fall is also a time of year when some fun and unique things that happen in nature.
- Migrating Monarchs: In the fall, millions of monarch butterflies embark on an incredible journey. They fly thousands of miles from North America to warmer climates in Mexico. This is one of the longest insect migrations in the world!
- Conkers and Chestnuts: In some parts of the world, kids play a game called conkers. They take chestnuts (also known as conkers), drill a hole through them, and thread them onto a string. Then they take turns trying to smash each other's conkers. It's a fun fall tradition!
- Fungus Among Us: Fall is a fantastic time for fungi! Many different types of mushrooms and other fungi pop up in forests and even in gardens. Some mushrooms are edible, but it's very important to know which ones are safe to eat.
- Sweater Weather: Fall is when the weather starts getting cooler, and it's time to break out cozy sweaters and scarves. Animals like squirrels grow thicker fur to keep warm, and some birds even migrate to warmer places.
- Apple Varieties: Did you know there are thousands of different types of apples? In the fall, you can find apples in all sorts of colors, sizes, and flavors at orchards and markets. From sweet to tart, there's an apple for everyone!
