By South Charlotte Macaroni Kid February 15, 2025

Mardi Gras is a staple in our house if we are not in New Orleans at the parades we are for sure celebrating at home. My husband was born and raised in New Orleans and now I have a son at Tulane so the Crescent City is deeply loved in the Plaisance house. Mardi Gras is what you make of it, our kids love it and as my husband will tell you, you get our of Mardi Gras what you want. It is a far more family friendly occassion than the pictures would lead you to believe. The crazy time in the French Quarter is a far cry from the tents filled with families cooking, visiting and enjoying the parades on St. Charles. What makes Mardi Gras so special?

A Brief History of Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras, which means "Fat Tuesday" in French, marks the last day of the Carnival season before the start of Lent in the Christian calendar. Traditionally, it's a time to indulge in rich foods and celebrations before the fasting and penance of Lent. While Mardi Gras is most famously celebrated in New Orleans, its roots can be traced back to ancient Europe, particularly France, Italy, and Spain. The first recorded American Mardi Gras celebration occurred in Mobile, Alabama, in 1703. However, New Orleans soon became the epicenter of Mardi Gras festivities, known for its grand parades, extravagant costumes, and vibrant street parties.
