Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools have given families several long weekends in their calendar this year. These mini vacy days are perfect to get out of town for a little get away. We have rounded up 12 ideas for a long weekend, over night or day trip to take advantage of these days. All of these destinations are within 4 hours of Charlotte (OK, 1 is 6 hours but totally worth the extra hour) and all of these destinations offer plenty of family friendly activities. There is so much to do in Gatlinburg beyond Dollywood. Fall in Gatlinburg is punctuated by beautiful hikes, lazy days on the river and down home cooking

Home of waterfalls! The Highlands are a perfect day or weekend trip while the weather is still warm and as the days get cooler, it is the perfect place to see the fall trees.
The beach is always a great idea! Fripp Island offers great beach fishing, a small town run by golf carts and amazing food.
The most charming town I have been to in North Carolina. It is no wonder so many movies use Southport for a backdrop. It feels like you have been transported back in time. Spend your days in and out of cute little shops, take a day trip to Wilmington and round out your day with a big plate of seafood on the water.
There is so much more to Charlottesville than UVA. Amazing wineries, history, tons of festivals and so much more. This is one of my favoriate cities in my home state of Virginia.
A quick trip from Charlotte, don't miss Quarry Granite Park, Tanglewood Park (amazing XMAS lights show here!), stroll the Arts District and take selfies in front of all of the murals and step back it time in Old Salem.
