My daughter graduated last week and thanks to the help we had working with Aaron and Pathfinders College Counseling, she is off to the college of her dreams with merit aid to boot! The help that they provided, the insight and help building her college list ended up giving her an amazing choice of universities and took a great deal of stress off of our family these last couple of years! Summer is the perfect time to get started and as always, SCMK readers can snag a free call with Aaron! Check out their summer guidance~
We are officially in the thick of summer. And if your house is anything like mine, that means a lot of sleeping in, a lot of TikTok scrolling, and a lot of "there's nothing to do" complaints. While letting our teens recharge is super important, summer is also a secret weapon that a lot of families accidentally miss out on.
Here’s the honest truth: the college and career conversation shouldn’t wait until junior or senior year. When families wait until the fall of senior year to ask, "So, what's next?", it usually leads to a mountain of stress, rushed essays, and missed opportunities.
But maximizing the summer doesn't mean your teen needs to spend eight hours a day chained to an SAT prep book. It’s actually way more fun than that. At Pathfinders College Counseling, we use a "career-first" approach. We map out a plan based on what your student actually loves doing.
No matter what age your teen is, here is a quick, stress-free guide on what they can be doing right now to get ahead before the school bell rings in August:
📝 Rising 9th Graders – The Explorers: Don't panic, you don't need to pick a college major yet! This summer is all about finding what sparks their curiosity. Encourage them to try local summer camps, dive into hobbies, or look up clubs they want to join at school this fall. The goal is simply discovering what they naturally enjoy.
🚀 Rising 10th Graders – The Connectors: This is the perfect time to start connecting those hobbies to the real world. Think about finding industry-specific volunteering around Charlotte, attending focused summer programs, or strategically picking high school courses that align with their strengths.
🔍 Rising 11th Graders – The Doers: Colleges love to see students who take action. This summer is huge for building real-world experience. Help them look into job shadowing a professional, finding a local internship, or taking on a leadership role in a community organization.
💼 Rising Seniors – The Finish Line: This is the big one. To avoid the inevitable September panic, rising seniors should be using these weeks to finalize their college lists, draft their admissions essays, and get a head start on applications. Trust us, crossing this off now will make senior year infinitely more enjoyable.
If your teen is currently doing none of the above, take a deep breath. Do not panic! There is still plenty of time to build a smart, personalized roadmap that connects their natural talents to future college and career success.
